What are the main online services that people use to host a public Free Software project.

The problem

Free software is regarded as a legal and technical solution, and we agree to list here both Open Source projects and Free Software projects, since technicaly, they mean quite the same, the only diference is in the motivation shared by the two sides.

The Solution

It is recomanded to study where your project will be hosted more deeply.

  • sourceforge.net the biggest one, Open Source philosophy, but 3/4 of projects are considered Free Software under GNU licence.
  • savannah.gnu.org Its used to host the GNU project. Has a stricly Free Software-only philosophy.
  • developer.berlios.de use the term Open source officialy to promote the site.
  • www.tigris.org Has an Open_Source-only philosophy, projects are under non-restrictive and non-copyleft licences.
  • schoolforge.net related to education software, use Open Source as motivation and to promote the site.
  • Alioth is a developement network around Debian-related projects
  • sarovar - India
  • codehaus - for JAVA programs
  • java-source - for JAVA programs
